Crime Scene Cleanup

From racial profiling and eugenics I move on to education and environmental concerns. I had hoped to display my ecological political credentials in unassailable narratives.

Now neither left-wing or right-wing have any handle on what we reckon with neither now nor our future. I'm not joining the voices of the doomsayers or the religious fanatics, Protestant or Muslim. I'm simply pointing out future generations, humans and nonhumans, face severe living conditions most will suffer through if they survive their first months or years. Few will last decades, but for the rich.

Death cleanup by ecological means has a new future for human and nonhumans alike, as I see it. Crime scene cleanup has a new meaning and goal. Biohazard cleanup includes oil cleanup. In the past we referred to oil cleanup as hazardous material cleanup. This misnomer lacks meaning because it leaves out life forms, the "bio" of biohazard cleanup.

These thoughts take me far from George Herbert Mead's seminal pragmatic thinking on American "justice," which he described in this three word title: Revenge, Retribution, and Isolation. When he wrote this article it applied to our justice system coast to coast, and more so in some areas than others. Thinking back to Hawthorn's Scarlet Letter and Hester's symbolic "A." Hester's primal crime cast her into isolation where she remained at risk retribution by her town's Puritans.

Hawthorn's depiction of the Reverend Dinnsdale reminds us of religion's house of deceit. Dinnsdale's patriarchic relationship to his parish and fails to dim Hester's liberation from the bonds of Puritan revenge, retribution, and isolation.

Twin's depiction of criminal behavior by the dominating patriarchs and robber barons foreshadows the might engines of technologically driven capital in humankind's contemptible behavior toward other species and the future of unborn generations, human and nonhuman.

Holmes' reminds us how free enterprise servers individuals as well as communities. Serendipity at the right time and place prove the rule, luck and perseverance often lead to business success. Meanwhile, the greedy, the unethical, the dirt bags of finance come to dwell on other's hard work and misfortunes.

How much more might we expect from our past then to remind us our current economic and ecological failures have long roots in our attitudes toward criminal justice, one another, and our planet? These ideas come into my crime scene cleanup paradigm in more meaningful terms then simple homicide.
