Few of us care to think of death, let alone dwell on it. And no wonder. </p> <p>Few of us make it through adolesence without enduring the loss of a relative or friend. We lose teahers too. Such losses become life-altering events. </p> <p>How we change following a death in our lives often depends on behavior by significant others near to us. If their behavior reflects compassion and understanding for others, admiring adolesents stand to learn a life-long lesson for dealing with death. They too come to deal with death by showing compassion and understanding for others related to the deceased. </p> <p>Grief, mourning, reactions, and comprehension all exist within the contexts of a community, family, religion, and peer groups. Each adolescent deals with death by comprehending and coping while existing in a world full of ambiguities; what to believe, what not to believe, and so on. Emotional development occurs in leaps-and-bounds during moments of grief and mouring. Simply mirroring other's behavior may help an adolesent get through the day, but emotional development has its own track following grief and mourning etched into our growing self. </p> <p>We must remember adolesents' limited experience. Because they have few life experiences to call upon, their emotional losses must have fewer points of reference, fewer meaningful emotional ties to others. If we imagine an "emotional schematic" with connections to the brain, spinal collum, and to our mammalian sensory apparatus, we'll find a less sophisticated schematic than found among adults.</p> <p>We find this adolesent, emotional schematic helps to explain the deep emotional damage experienced by children exposed to nearby violence. Violent episodes between parents, traggic accidents occuring in their presence, and war help to explain Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among children. Logically, it would seem, PTSD among children must have a deep, broad influence upon their emotional development, at times.</p> <p>Of course no two individuals undergo the same emotional development through adolesence. Where one suffers great PTSD as a life-long emotional influence, another may altogether pass the matter off. Little event processing takes off. This later instance seems unlikely occured without influncing an adolesent in later years, but its sublimation could occur without ever desublimating during a life-time.</p> <p>Put another way, people develop their own type of body armor internally and externally. </p> <p>Some significant others, family members, friends of the deceased, and peers were trained to "show no weakness" and "be tough." They do so and influence those around them by doing so. </p> <p>These seemingly emotionless people create ambiguities for adolesents. Simply relying on their natural, emotional development, adolesents want more than stoward models for understanding death. They wonder what questions to ask. If they ask, do they dare try to uncover or expose something they or others would rather not know or want others to know. After all, adolesents know when some adults lie or manipulate. </p> <p>We wonder what we might have said or done differently. Our future coping stratigies for dealing with death set the stage for presenting ourselves to others at an awkard moment, death of another. </p> <p>Of course, adolesents perceive death relative to their their age and developmental level. We all know that three- to 5-year-olds show a poor understanding of time and permanence. Few ideas in their world have a background in life experience. A pet's death does not mean a permanent disappearence of their furty friend, but a momentary loss . After all, the world revolves around these children, to their way of seeing things. </p> <p>If such children relate death to falling asleep, they may later have a fear of falling asleep. They may also view the death of another as their own fault. Then there's thoughts about others soon leaving their world by death. As we expect, although short-lived, moments of dread and fear follow guilty feelings because of another's loss to death. </p> <p> By the time children six- to 8-year-olds seriously consider death, they believe death hapens to other people and does not really include them. We see by this development their earlier fear of death subsides in emotional development. An interest in death's appearance may manifest itself from watching television portrayed deaths, however distorted. </p> <p> In a short time between nine- to 11-year-olds, children realized death has a finality and irreversibility to it.. They realize that death can happen to anyone, including themselves. Concern for their own immortality begins in ernest, but their parents' mortality takes center stage in thier thoughts. "What if" questions begin to emerge as their critical thinking develops. </p> <p>By this time in their lives joking about death becomes a mask for their grief. Boys may show a staged indifference, thereby abandoning their own part in the death of others if not themselves. </p> <p>Thus masking their grief and possible gult feelings, indifferent appearing boys and others may move in and out stages during the grieving process. Caught off guard by death, shock and disbelief occur with feelings of numbness and apathy, which may be interpreted as indifference. Moreso, a withdrawl from others or calmness may signal grieving masked by indifference. </p> <p>Death's denial often becomes an experienced stage occurring within the first two weeks after the death and can last minutes, days, weeks or months.</p> <p> Refusal to acknowledge their loss and reliance enjoined by day dreaming and fantasizing a new reality for their place in the universe and the deceased by develop. Uncontrolled anger, guilt, depression, and anxiety develop for those new to death of a friend or relative. They blame others and may even blame themselves for their loss. </p> <p>Guilt may grow with bad thoughts about our decedent. Maybe our behavior toward the deceased, however real or imagined. Days, weeks, months, and a year or even two years pass before a new learning replaces guild, rage, anger, depression, and self-denial.
